Research proposal at the Universidad Autónomade Occidente consists of implementing deepneural networks equipped with attentionmechanisms for breast cancer detection frommammograms of adult women with a suspiciousnodule in the physical examination.
Two research projects using convolutional neural networks, MLP classifiers, Random Forests, SVMs,and the Grad-CAM explanation technique for feature extraction from chest radiographic images,classification into 3 categories: normal, bacterialpneumonia, and viral pneumonia, and explanation of model predictions, respectively.
Responsibilities:
Investigate methods for extracting complementary rules from convolutional neural networks, in the sense that they derive knowledge from the network to explain the reasons leading to a prediction.
Achievements:
-Insight into the internal representations of the neural network trained with retinal images, by means of heat maps that highlighted regions containing characteristic lesions of diabetic retinopathy.
-Knowledge of the feature maps produced in the convolutional layers of the network, to identify the disease lesions that the model recognizes and those that it does not, and to propose improvements in the design and architecture of the network.
-Introduction to research.
-Completion of undergraduate thesis.
-Adaptation to a new environment and independence.
