The CDC Foundation is working with CDC and state and localauthorities to provide surge staffing that is crucial to the nation’s COVID-19 response including support for implementation of Covid-19 vaccine. We are seeking candidates for thePublic Relations and Communications Strategistrole.The Public Relations and Communications Strategist is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive public relations and communications strategies to meet the media, marketing, communications, and outreach and stakeholder engagement goals for the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). The incumbent collaborates with internal CDPH teams (communications, media relations, web, social media, outreach and education) and program staff as well as external partners, including but not limited to state partners and local public health departments, to reflect the core goals and messages of CDPH and build and sustain the department’s reputation.Responsibilities
  • Provide public relations and media expertise to inform and provide expert counsel on sensitive, and urgent issues for approval by CDPH leadership and the California Health and Human Services and Governor’s Office communications teams and leadership, as needed.
  • Develop, execute, disseminate, and monitor communications and media strategies and products that successfully inform and convey key messages to the targeted audiences.
  • Develop production schedules and project budgets and ensure all products, materials, and assets produced are of the highest quality and adhere to CDPH branding and legal standards.
  • Serve as a liaison with media and communications leads from local public health departments to understand their public relations and communications needs and align messaging.
  • Track, monitor, and evaluate communications and media strategies, campaigns, and other products against pre-established goals.
  • Advance health equity by ensuring that outreach efforts and materials are culturally and linguistically accessible to all identified target audiences.
  • Keep current with technology and trends for communications and methods for targeting specific audiences/populations.
Education
  • Master’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, Public Health, Public Policy, or related fields.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the field of communications, preferably within the public health arena, including experience developing and executing a broad range of communications and media strategies.
  • Experience working with a range of stakeholders, including senior leadership, subject matter experts, and other internal and external partners.
  • Must be able to work effectively as a team member while also being able to work independently on specific activities with an eye to staying on task and timeline.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Strong understanding of communication theory and its application to strategy.
  • Experience leading project teams or leading a collaborative effort on behalf of a team or organization.
  • Must be able to produce communication products, documents, presentation materials, and other materials that are of a high standard and error-free, and that are consistent with department standards, policies, and procedures.
